10 Best Zombie Video Games Today

Preparing for the zombie apocalypse can be exhausting work. From the constant physical and technical training that preparation demands, to the constant paranoia of never knowing exactly how or when the apocalypse will commence, burn-out is a very real concern among zombie survivalists. Burning out can be incredibly dangerous, as it is right when your guard is down and your training is at its rustiest that you’ll find yourself staring into the lifeless eyes of a moaning corpse.

You can avoid burnout by blowing off some steam, and what better way to do that than by playing zombie video games? Here are some highlights of the genre:

Top Zombie Video Games Of All Time

Left for Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2Left for Dead 2 is one of the best-known zombie games. It revolutionized not only the zombie genre, but also the concept of multiplayer co-op games in general. LFD2 is a first-person shooter in which you have a team of 3 other survivors who must battle their way through a slog of sprinting “infected” alongside eerily disgusting “special infected” which include acid spewing zombies and infectious pus filled exploding zombies. The zombies in LFD2 are definitely the worst-case scenario.

Call of Duty Zombies

Call of Duty IIEver since Call of Duty started including zombies as bonus levels, first-person shooter fans have had the pleasure of head-shoting two of the most deserving characters: zombies and Nazis. Call of Duty’s version of zombies is great training because it combines crawling, hobbling, and sprinting zombies into one hair-raising scenario. Using chokepoints, conserving ammunition, and the importance of teamwork are all real-world strategic elements zombie survivalists can learn from this game.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Red Dead Redemption: Undead NightmareAlthough the strategic value of this title is limited, it is still a great way to waste a few hours blowing off steam. An expansion pack for the Western themed “Red Dead Redemption”, Undead Nightmare is a third-person shooter in which you must survive the undead hordes with 19th century technology. Good luck!

The Walking Dead

the-walking-deadBased on the graphic novel and television series, this character driven game is a great way to involve yourself in what is currently the most well-known zombie franchise in the United States. Although there is not a lot of combat in this game, there is a great deal of strategic thinking, which is a great way to mentally condition yourself for the types of decisions you will face when the inevitable zombie apocalypse hits your town.

Plants vs. Zombies

plants-vs-zombiesAlthough this title is more of a tower defense game than a straight-up zombie game, it is still a great deal of fun. Players are given different types of plants, each with their own powers. The player is then faced with a constant barrage of increasingly clever (and annoying) zombies, including zombies on pogo sticks and bungee jumping zombies! Let’s all be glad that in a real zombie apocalypse the worst we will have to (hopefully) deal with will be ambling corpses, not ones raining down from the sky!

Dead Nation

Dead NationThis game is not as well-known as some of the others, however it is nonetheless one of the best zombie titles available. Dead Nation features stunning graphics and an overwhelming horde of realistic looking undead corpses. Dead Nation is a good game for survivalists to play because it helps train you for the inevitable need to conserve ammunition. Although the weapons in Dead Nation are powerful (much like your ought to be), they never seem to have enough bullets for the hordes chasing after you.

Dead Rising 2

dead-rising-2The plot for Dead Rising 2 is completely ridiculous. However, if you are looking for a gory way to blow off some steam, it can be a hell of a lot of fun. Dead Rising 2 is a zombie shooter, however there are a myriad of unconventional weapons which make it both ridiculous and amusing. There is certainly something to be said for exercising your creative muscles for when your conventional weapons are running out of ammo during the real zombie apocalypse.

Resident Evil 4

resident-evil-4The Resident Evil series has been a highlight for gamers for years now. However, the best release is hands-down Resident Evil 4. Because the game is so stressful, it is probably not the best way to relax. However, if you are looking for some scary fun and just cannot wait for the chance to blow away some real zombies during the actual epidemic, this game is a great substitute.

In addition, Day Z includes real human needs such as food, water, and shelter, which makes it a great way to practice surviving the real deal.
