Bear Mace vs Zombie Apocalypse

After the undead inherit the earth, those that manage to survive will endure challenges and horrors unknown to anyone alive today. Simply surviving the initial outbreak will be difficult, and finding a sustainable way to exist in the long term will be possible only for the smartest and strongest willed individuals. Throughout the collapse, but particularly after the dust settles, ravenous corpses will not be the only danger facing survivors. The unfortunate but honest reality is that other living humans will become as grave a threat, if not even more so, than the undead. As time goes on, Darwinistic forces will leave only the most ruthless and cunning alive. No one will have clean hands.

Because of this, it is important to remember that a survival kit must include the ability to defend oneself not only from the undead, but from the hostile living as well. Although many of the weapons useful against zombies are also effective against other human beings, there will be situations in which lethal force will be undesirable. Perhaps an individual’s intentions will be unknown and a precautionary measure needs to be taken, or perhaps two survival groups at odds will want to prevent an escalating conflict by withholding lethal force. Whatever situation might arise, it is useful to have flexibility in the level of force used.

Bear Mace Non Zombie Stealth Application

Bear mace is a variant of pepper spray, commonly used to incapacitate an attacking bear without causing permanent damage. It works by firing a long, wide cloud of foam anywhere from 10 to 50 feet in one direction. An individual hit with bear mace will experience excruciating pain and a burning sensation, however permanent damage is very unlikely. The effects can last anywhere from a several minutes to a few hours, depending on the quantity and quality of bear mace that comes in contact with the individual. Anyone hit with bear mace will be unable to aim a weapon or pose any significant threat until the effects wear off. The wide berth of the spray allows for a tightly packed group of several hostiles to be incapacitated at the same time.

One of the biggest disadvantages with bear mace is its complete uselessness against the undead. Contrary to what some believe, bear mace will simply have zero effect on a zombie’s vision or their movement. This is because bear mace works by causing pain and by irritating the blood vessels in the eyeballs. One of the most fearsome traits of the undead is their complete inability to feel pain of any kind. If chopping off a zombie’s arm with a machete doesn’t cause them to flinch, it is beyond foolish to think non-lethal bear mace will have any effect whatsoever.

Bear mace is not effective in temporarily blinding zombies either. Zombies are not dependent on a functioning circulatory system, and typically the blood of the undead congeals to the point where it more closely resembles a gel than a fluid. Since bear mace relies on irritating the blood vessels providing oxygen to the eyeballs, it has absolutely zero effect on a zombie’s ability to search for prey.

The other significant disadvantage is the limited supply in each canister. Because the effects have a long range and wide spread, most commercial grade canisters only have enough fluid for several seconds of spraying before running dry. Some argue that the limited scope of usefulness along with the limited supply in each canister renders bear mace too inefficient for a survival kit. Although this is a valid point, it should be considered if there are enough members in the group carrying equipment or a fortified structure for long term use is available.
