Zombie vs Baseball Bat

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Aluminum Baseball Bat

When designing a zombie survival kit, often times the mind will immediately think of high-powered rifles, M16s, and even flamethrowers. Unfortunately, these types of weapons have a disadvantage the undead hordes do not: limited ammunition. The false sense of security provided by the explosive noise of unleashing countless 5.56 millimeter rounds into a pack of hungry zombies will quickly be replaced with heart-stopping fear as the formidable BAM-BAM-BAM-BAM is replaced with the meek click-click-click-click of an empty magazine.

MultiplicityHistory is littered with the failed survival stories of those that forgot ammunition is limited, and just as important, ammunition is loud. Dispatching 60 zombies with expert headshots is completely useless if the noise attracts ravenous hordes from 20 miles in every direction to your location. Save the ammunition for the critical emergencies when there is no way to escape the location and train with quieter weapons that have no need for limited ammunition.

The Reliable Baseball Bat Weapon

A high quality aluminum baseball bat is one of the best friends a survivor can have. The aluminum baseball bat is quiet, reliable, and highly effective at close range. It has virtually unlimited ammunition – provided you’ve trained to be in sufficiently good shape for extended use- and is effective in several different scenarios.

The first and most obvious use of the baseball bat is its ability to crush the skull of a zombie that thinks you’re its dinner. A well placed swing can knock the undead on its back, and a follow up swing into the face can end its miserable existence once and for all. When going for the final blow, try to hit in the groove between the nose and the forehead; this area is more vulnerable and will put less strain on both the bat and the wielder. Don’t be shy about an additional follow up swing or three if there’s time; zombies are incredibly resilient and it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Almost Perfect Zombie Weapon

There are two main disadvantages with relying on a baseball bat for defense. The biggest risk is the possibility that the bat is not as well made as previously thought. Having a bat break at the wrong time can mean the difference between surviving and joining the ranks of the undead. Even the sturdiest bat can fall apart with enough use; don’t get overconfident by relying on a bat working 100% of the time.

The other problem is being in a situation where there simply is not enough time or space to swing at a large number of zombies before being overwhelmed. In situations such as these, a firearm might be a better choice. However, if a firearm is impractical or unavailable, a baseball bat can still be useful in repelling the undead. Zombies often have weak motor skills, particularly older ones that have been decomposing for a longer period of time. A smart survivor with a baseball bat can repel several zombies quickly by extending the bat and pushing them backward. Throwing a zombie off balance can buy enough time to make an escape route. With practice, quick, low-exertion jabs can knock an unsuspecting zombie on its back, buying precious seconds and creating an additional obstacle for their hungry cohorts to overcome at the same time.

There is no doubt that having rapid-fire weapons like a rifle or crossbow are highly useful in any survival scenario. However, survivors who are able to add a strong, sturdy baseball bat to their arsenal will be able to overcome a wider variety of scenarios and conserve precious ammunition for when it is needed most.
