Zombie vs Crossbow

The Ultimate Zombie Survival Weapon: The Crossbow

For centuries in Medieval Europe, the crossbow was universally feared for its ability to quickly and quietly dispatch enemies from a distance. Knights and swordsmen alike were powerless against a well-aimed arrow to their chest or face. The proliferation of gunpowder gradually rendered the crossbow obsolete in modern warfare, and proficiency in wielding a crossbow eventually became limited to hobbyists.

However, there is one small group of people that continue to train extensively with crossbows. The smartest zombie survivalists, and the ones with the greatest chance of surviving the zombie apocalypse, understand that the crossbow is perhaps the single best weapon available after the undead hordes lay claim to the earth. The crossbow has significant advantages that place it above virtually every other ranged weapon. However, the crossbow is not for everyone, and there are very real disadvantages that must be considered before including it in a survival armory.

Crossbow Mastery

The biggest issue with choosing a crossbow as a primary weapon is the substantial skill level required to wield it effectively. Arrows from a crossbow have zero stopping power against a hungry zombie, and anything less than a direct head-shot will be completely in vain. Under optimal circumstances, a head-shot is difficult; imagine how the difficulty will increase as a rotting, angry, moaning creature that shouldn’t even exist is rapidly closing in on your position. On top of that there will be exhaustion, darkness, and countless other factors adding to the pressure.

Needless to say, only the best composed shooters with hundreds upon hundreds of hours of practice will be able to consistently and reliably land the needed headshots. Don’t let Daryl of the Walking Dead fool you into thinking a crossbow is easy to use. Even though he makes it look easy to headshot zombies, remember that he spent his entire life using weapons like the crossbow. Also, he is a fictional television character.

The other disadvantage of a crossbow is the slow rate of fire. Even the fastest and most experienced will only be able to get a few shots off per minute. The crossbow is best used in wide open spaces where there is room to run around, alongside both a hand-to-hand weapon and a firearm to use in a pinch.

The Ranged Advantage

Despite these disadvantages, the crossbow is still the best weapon for those able to properly wield it. Unlike firearms, the crossbow is virtually the only ranged weapon with unlimited ammunition (the bow and arrow being one of the few others). Arrows are reusable, and an experienced user can fashion additional arrows from materials found along the way. The ability to take out zombies at range offers an advantage over reusable weapons like an aluminum baseball bat and a machete because there is no risk of a stray scratch or bite.

The crossbow is also incredibly quiet. Unlike firearms and even blunt weapons like a baseball bat, the arrow from a crossbow can eliminate a zombie threat almost in silence. This is useful when sneaking up on more than one zombie. However, the biggest value comes from the fact that, unlike a firearm, a crossbow will not attract zombies in the surrounding area.

A crossbow can function as a hunting weapon as well. The arrows from a crossbow can kill small game, birds, and even larger animals. However, it is absolutely essential to use completely different arrows for hunting the undead and hunting wild game. Eating even the smallest bit of undead flesh will be fatal.

There are very few individuals capable of properly harnessing a crossbow. However, those able to do so will stand a significantly higher chance of survival, and will prove to be one of the most valuable members of any survival group. If at all possible, become an expert with this impressive and versatile weapon.
