Zombie vs Shotgun

Shotgun: The Ultimate Zombie Failsafe

Zombie ready shotgunThere are few feelings more frightening than looking down the barrel of a loaded shotgun pointed at your face. Shotguns are known as one of the best home defense weapons, and are among the easiest weapons to use; just point and shoot!

In the case of a zombie infection, a reliable shotgun can be the difference between getting out of a close encounter alive or becoming another member of the mindless ravenous hordes plaguing the planet. The power of a shotgun at close range is unparalleled, and they have advantages that make them ideal in situations where a bladed or other ranged weapon might do more harm than good.

Most zombie weapons suffer from a sometimes fatal flaw: They require precise aim to permanently take down the undead. Under the best of circumstances, a pistol or rifle round into the chest of a zombie will knock the abomination on its back. More likely the shot will be as useless as a shot from a cap gun, and will go unnoticed by the ravenous corpse hell-bent on gulping down your entrails.

Zombies do not need blood, guts, or oxygen to survive. The only way to stop a zombie is by destroying its brain, which means you must hit a fairly small target on a moaning, hobbling corpse. Do not underestimate how much their blank, milky eyes staring at you like a tender cut of filet mignon will affect your otherwise steady hand.

Shotgun vs Melee

Bladed hand-to-hand weapons suffer from similar disadvantages. Piercing a zombie’s heart with your katana will do nothing other than get your katana stuck while giving the zombie a chance to grab you as you try to pull the katana out. Even worse is slicing through them only to find you now have a “crawler” to deal with along with any other upright zombies still after you. The most common method, beheading, requires a follow-up stab through the still-chomping zombie skull. Forgetting to do so leaves a deadly zombie head landmine for you or another unwitting survivor to step upon.

Although shotguns have limited ammo capacity, limited effective range, and are incredibly loud, there is simply no better way to blast away the undead than a buckshot load to the face. Shotguns are extremely easy to fire accurately, as the lead pellets will hit a much wider range than a round out of a pistol or rifle. Even if you only manage to hit the zombie in the chest or stomach, there is enough firepower at close range to literally rip their body apart. The zombie will still require a follow-up shot or stab through the head, but they will be much more manageable after you turn them into a mangled heap on the floor.

Shotguns absolutely have their place in a well-rounded survival kit, however they should by no means be your primary weapon if at all possible. They are very good at what they do, but their effectiveness is significantly diminished at anything other than close range, which with any luck will be a situation you rarely face. Nevertheless, there’s simply no better feeling when you’re cornered by a rotting moaning ambling corpse than having a loaded shotgun pointed at their face.
